What Animals live in our barnyard?
What you'll find in The Romantic Mom.com
That's not a real cow she's milking there. I'm sure I had you completely fooled, didn't I? You never noticed the shiny sheen radiating from the side of that very clean, very smooth cow. No, she's pretending to milk a fiberglass cow...my kinda cow, I might add! No, no, I LOVE cows! I do! I'm just not up for the sheer weight of responsibility it requires to MILK cows. Naturally my kiddos think THEY are. Right.
Besides, I promised my dad just last week that we WOULD NOT be getting a cow. My parents are from Depression-era farms and they know just a bit about what milkin' is all about. Poor guy, he never knows these days what we'll up and do. He and Mom are totally helpless 2300 miles away in TX. Last year it was the pony. Yes, I wheedled my poor hubby into the whole sordid drama...of a pony instead of a dog.... for Mother's Day, no less.... and the twin's birthday. (Did I mention that I'm a very very submissive wife? I never ever beg or manipulate my husband? A total yes-woman...that's me). So there you have it. The truth comes spilling forth. And guess who took care of MY pony in 6 feet of snow all winter long!
I didn't promise, however, that I wouldn't get a calf. Are calves OK? You don't even have to milk a calf...and they're SO cute! Alright, alright, I'm kidding! Please, it's a joke. Whew! How about a goat?
Anyway, we'll take up my barnyard drama later. Let's have a look at some animals!
Local Barnyard Animals
By "local" I mean local to us...which is Maine. This may not be "local" to you....but I betcha Maine cows look and smell pretty much like Oklahoma cows or Michigan cows or Oregon cows....with the one exception of Martha Stewart's cows. I can't imagine her cows smelling like our cows. Does Martha have a cow? Oh, and another exception...Texas Cows...the Longhorns. I'm not sure how they smell, but they sure are beautiful! They're the glamorous, movie-star cows.
And as for all the OTHER barn-y (no, not the purple one!) animals, well, let's just find out...
The Romantic Mom's (and troop's) Animals
We have all of three types of animals from the barnyard animal kingdom. And, yes, they are VERY romantic animals - maybe not as much as Martha's or Mary Jane's - but I would definitely unequivocally say they are romantic.
You don't believe me? Well, just look at them! How can you argue? Especially with names like Babycakes, Morgan, Freckles, Gracie, and Truffles--well how much more romantic can you get? I wanna know! And here are more stories and photos about our animals...as well as local farm animals!
Babycakes
This is our pony, Babycakes. She's part Quarter horse and Haflinger (the smallest of the draft breeds) at 13.2 hands. We got Babycakes when she was 2 which is how old she was in these photos (Fall 2007). She looks good in red - it's her color. She loves to eat grass and will let us do pretty much anything to her as long as she has grass to eat. It's one of her most noble characteristics.
Yes, that's my dad there. He's a sucker for Baby too, just like we all are. She minds him better than any of the rest of us.
The Bunnies
That would be Freckles, Gracie, And Truffles. We got our little bun-buns last year from our neighbors when they were only about 3 weeks old. They were just too cuddly for words! They're now very big bun-buns but still very cute (their most noble characteristic). They escape on a regular basis to hide out under the shed. The kids have become amazingly adept at catching the little rascals though! They also like to run their bunnies on a leash. You gotta see it to appreciate it!
Here I am on Baby...just my size, don't ya think?
Morgan the Kitty
Does anyone ever really OWN a cat? Morgan has shown up and adopted us and that's fine with us. The kids have been begging for a kitty so God has conveniently given them a cat! He's still a little skittish around big people. But he LOVES little people and lets them haul him around upside-down and sideways! He just purrs and purrs. He keeps Babycakes company - from a distance. He likes to lay on her hay. He's also a really great mouser. His most noble characteristic.
The Post Family Farm
Who's kiddin' who? It's springtime and kids and calves and baby critters of all varieties are everywhere. Meet Violet, the calf, who thinks she's a kid. The kids named all the kids, too, but there's way too many for me to remember. I have enough problems with my own kids! And then there's the white kid (do kids have horns?), below, with the little pink tongue who thinks the car is a salt-lick. Road salt...salt lick...what's the diff?
